KENYA


Kenya's capital and largest city is Nairobi. Kenya covers 581,309 sq. km. and has a population of approximately 44 million people. Kenya has a warm humid climate along its Indian Ocean coastline with wildlife rich savannah grasslands inland towards the capital. Nairobi has a cool climate which becomes colder closer to Mount Kenya which has only one permanently snow capped peak left. Further inland there is a warm and humid climate around Lake Victoria and temperate forested and hilly areas in the western region. The northeastern regions along the border with Somalia and Ethiopia are arid and semi arid areas with near desert landscapes. Lake Victoria the world's second largest fresh water lake and the largest tropical lake is situated to the southwest and is shared with Uganda and Tanzania. Kenya along with Uganda and Tanzania is famous for its safaris and diverse wildlife reserves and national parks such as the East and West Tsavo National Park, the Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru National Park and Aberdares National Park.
 

Nairobi National Park

Major wildlife attractions are the Black rhino, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, buffaloes, Giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, elands and diverse birdlife with over 400 species recorded. Other attractions include the Ivory burning site Monument, Nairobi Safari Walk, the Orphanage and the walking trails at hippo pools.

Maasai Mara

It is globally famous for its exceptional population of lions, leopards and cheetahs and the annual migration of zebra, Thomson's gazelle and wildebeest to and from the Serengeti every year from July to October. The Maasai Mara National Reserve is only a fraction of the Greater Mara Ecosystem.

Giraffe Centre

The Giraffe Centre is located at Karen approximately 5 km from the centre of Nairobi. It was established in order to protect the endangered Rothschild giraffe, Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi, that is found only in the grasslands of East Africa.

Tsavo West National Park

Tsavo West National Park is located in the Coast Province of Kenya. The park covers an area of 9,065 sq. km. Tsavo West is a more popular destination on account of its magnificent scenery, Mzima Springs, rich and varied wildlife, good road system, rhino reserve, rock climbing potential and guided walks along the Tsavo River.

Hell's Gate National Park

The Park lies to the south of Lake Naivasha. There are over 100 species of birds including vultures, Verreaux's Eagles, augur buzzard and swifts. African buffalo, zebra, eland, hartebeest, Thomson's gazelle and baboons are also common. The park is also home to klipspringer antelope and Chanler's mountain reedbuck.

Samburu National Reserve

There is a wide variety of animal and bird life seen at Samburu National Reserve. Several large game species common to Kenya's northern plains can be found in abundance here including dry country fauna, gerenuk, Grevy's zebra, oryx and reticulated giraffe. All three big cats lion, cheetah and leopard can also be found here as well as elephants, buffaloes and hippos.

Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary

The sanctuary was created in 1993 to conserve the serene surroundings which houses the rare and endangered African elephants, moist deciduous forest, riparian vegetation and other special attractions available in the ecosystem.

Arabuko Sokoke National Park

The Arabuko Sokoke Forest protects many endemic and near endemic species. The Clarke's weaver is completely endemic to the forest while the emonymous Sokoke scops owl, Sokoke pipit and the Amani sunbird and spotted ground thrush are found only here and in a forest fragment.

Shimba Hill's National Reserve

There are estimated to be approximately 700 elephants in the reserve. This population is unsustainably high and it causes significant damage to vegetation threatening the endangered plant life. Over 50% of the 159 rare plants in Kenya are found in the Shimba Hills.

Mombasa Marine Park

The park comprises of the sea waters, mangroves, sea grasses and sea weeds. The park is home to variety of marine life like Crabs, Sea urchins, Sea cucumbers, Starfish & Sea Jellies. Other spectacular attractions include the sand beach and coral gardens. The park is a popular snorkeling and diving location.

Watamu Marine National Park

It is located about 140 km north of Mombasa. Its coral gardens are merely 300m from the shore and are home to approximately 600 species of fish, 110 species of stony coral and countless invertebrates, crustaceans and molluscs.

Manda Island

Manda is an island of the Lamu Archipelago of Kenya known for the prosperous 9th century ports of Takwa and Manda town. The island is now linked by ferry to Lamu and is home to Manda Airport while Manda Toto island lies to its west. The island is separated from the mainland by the narrow Mkanda channel.

Rusinga Island

Rusinga Island with an elongated shape approximately 16 km from end to end and 5 km at its widest point lies in the eastern part of Lake Victoria at the mouth of the Winam Gulf. Rusinga is widely known for its extraordinarily rich and important fossil beds of extinct Miocene mammals dated to 18 million years.

The beach is known for its coral reefs, black and white colobus monkeys and for the closely located Shimba Hills National Reserve, a wildlife reserve which looks out over the Indian Ocean. Diani Beach has high class restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and several shopping centres.

Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake outside the town of Naivasha in Nakuru County which lies north west of Nairobi. It is part of the Great Rift Valley. The name derives from the local Maasai name Nai'posha meaning "rough water" because of the sudden storms which can arise.

Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley soda lakes at an elevation of 1754 m above sea level. It lies to the south of Nakuru in the rift valley of Kenya. The lake's abundance of algae attracts the vast quantity of flamingos that famously line the shore. Other birds also flourish in the area as do warthogs, baboons and other large mammals. Black and white rhinos have also been introduced.

Ngong Hills

The Ngong Hills are peaks in a ridge along the Great Rift Valley located southwest near Nairobi. The word "Ngong" is an Anglicization of a Maasai phrase "enkong'u emuny" meaning rhinoceros spring and this name derives from a spring located near Ngong Town.

Menengai

Menengai Crater is a massive shield volcano with one of the biggest calderas in the world located in the Great Rift Valley. The caldera floor is covered with numerous post caldera lava flows. The Menengai volcano is considered one of the best preserved Krakatau style calderas in the world.
